The Lorhabi Soumak

The Lorhabi, a Tadjik speaking people, come from the north-central region of Afghanistan, though they are currently living as refugees near Peshawar, Pakistan. They are known for their intricately woven soumak flat weaves, which they have continued to produce while in exile. Field designs are limited; the "Lorhabi Gul", a closeup of which is pictured in the insert, is most frequently used. However, the border designs show great variation and the great variety of vegetable dyed colors employed make each piece unique. Sizes vary from small to an occasional room size.
