The Tibetan

Weaving Project

The Tibetan people have woven carpets for centuries. Tibet, of course, is now occupied by China, and the carpets that I sell are actually made in Kathmandu, Nepal. They are woven of hand spun wool that has been vegetable-dyed. Most of the Tibetan rugs that I select are traditional in design, though they often appear contemporary (e.g. the "gopcha" or door rug pictured here), as a consequence of their simplicity. A wide variety of colors and sizes are available.

All of the Tibetan carpets that I carry have been woven in projects established by the non-profit human rights organization Cultural Survival. All monies paid for these rugs at the wholesale level have been returned to the Tibetan community. Specifically, funds have been used for continued maintenance of the weaving projects, education of Tibetan children, and a sizable reforestation project in southeastern Tibet. Additional information can be found in a series of newsletters that have been appended to this website.
